Chair of the Civil Cases Division of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, Dr. Artūras Driukas, Appointed Justice of the Constitutional Court
Today, Dr. Artūras Driukas, Chair of the Civil Cases Division of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, assumes office as a Justice of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania.
Dr. A. Driukas has served as a judge for more than 30 years. He began his judicial career in 1995 at the Druskininkai District Court. Since 1996, he continued his career at the Lithuanian Court of Appeal, where he worked for more than two decades (1996–1999, 2003–2021). For more than 10 years, he served as Chair of that Court’s Civil Cases Division.
Since 2021, Dr. A. Driukas has served as a judge of the Civil Cases Division of the Supreme Court of Lithuania (having previously served in the same position from 1999 to 2003), and since 2023, as Chair of that Division. In addition, in 2022, he was seconded for a three-month period to perform the duties of a judge of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania.
The judge holds a doctoral degree in Social Sciences (Law), is a Partnership Professor at the Department of Private Law of the Faculty of Law of Vilnius University, and is a dedicated mediator. Prior to embarking on his judicial career, A. Driukas practised as an attorney for 10 years (1984–1994). He also taught at Mykolas Romeris University for 12 years (2000–2012).
Throughout his more than 30-year judicial career, the judge has actively participated in judicial self-governance. He has served as a member and chair of the Judicial Mediation Commission, a member and chair of the Judicial Ethics and Discipline Commission, as well as a member of the Judicial Candidates Examination Commission and the Judicial Candidates Selection Commission.
“The understanding among the Justices and staff of the Supreme Court of Lithuania of what true cassation is and of the Court’s principal objectives continues to deepen. Above all, these objectives include ensuring the uniformity of judicial practice throughout the country and harmonising the interpretation and application of the law. I am very pleased to have been able to contribute to the fulfilment of these functions—improving the quality of cassation appeal selection, adjudicating cassation cases, and developing precedent. This is highly responsible work, yet it provides immense professional satisfaction, allowing one to work alongside colleagues of the highest legal calibre and, together, to develop and shape the law that will guide legal practitioners throughout the country. This work requires a constant interest in various fields of law and continuous growth both as a person and as a lawyer, while recognising its profound significance. I thank my fellow judges and the entire court staff for our joint work, engaging discussions, and the search for better solutions. I wish you continued progress, perseverance in seeking and finding the key to justice, success in fulfilling the mission of the court of cassation, and strength in overcoming future challenges,” said Judge Dr. A. Driukas in his farewell remarks.
