Chairperson of the Criminal Division participated in the first meeting of the newly composed Public Council of International Experts
On the 27-29th August, Chairperson of the Criminal Division of the Supreme Court of Lithuania Gabrielė Juodkaitė-Granskienė, who is a member of the Public Council of International Experts (PCIE), participated in the PCIE initial orientation session held in Kyiv. This session was also attended by the High Qualification Commission of Judges (HQCJ).
Strategic issues of the Council's performance and interaction with other stakeholders were in focus of this meeting’s agenda. Participants of this meeting reviewed good practices and lessons learned from other institutions involved in the selection of judges, members of judicial institutions, and civil servants in Ukraine; discussed about the methods and strategies for organizing the PCIE’s work; built a dialogue and interaction between the PCIE and the HQCJ focusing on facilitating the vetting and selection of the High Anti-corruption Court (HACC) judges and explored potential areas of cooperation with representatives of civil society organizations to contribute to the integrity of the selection of HACC judges.
During orientation sessions, the PCIE heard from experts from prior secretariats for judicial selection committees who spoke about the practices of the previous PCIE composition, the context of anti-corruption reform in Ukraine, and legislative updates concerning the performance of both the PCIE and the judiciary in general.
PCIE conducts integrity checks of candidates applying for the positions of judges of the High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) together with the High Qualification Commission of Judges of Ukraine (HQCJ).
