This year, the Federal Court of Justice and the Office of the Federal Public Prosecutor General of Germany are marking the 75th anniversary of their establishment. On this significant occasion, a ceremonial event was held in the city of Karlsruhe, bringing together representatives of the European judicial community.

The ceremony, which took place in the historic auditorium of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, was attended by the Federal President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, as well as the heads of supreme courts from various European countries, including the President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, Danguolė Bublienė.

In his congratulatory address, President Steinmeier, emphasizing the importance of the Federal Court of Justice and the Office of the Federal Public Prosecutor General, recalled that for 75 years these institutions have consistently contributed to the enforcement of the law and to its uniform interpretation and application in the fields of criminal and civil law. “I know that carrying out these tasks—both quantitatively and qualitatively—is not easy. And we all know that they will not become any easier in the future. Therefore, I hope that our judicial system at all levels will be provided not only with the respect it deserves, but also with the necessary resources,” said the Federal President of Germany.

“This 75th anniversary has a special symbolic meaning – it is not merely a historical commemoration of the establishment and activities of these institutions. This milestone reminds us that independent courts and a professionally functioning prosecution service form the foundation of the constitutional order, ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights and public security. The celebration also expresses confidence in the state’s legal system and its stability, which has endured despite political, social, and security challenges over seven decades,” Dr. Danguolė Bublienė shared her impressions of the event.

The anniversary also provided an opportunity not only to mark the historical significance of the institutions, but to discuss contemporary challenges: cybercrime, new threats to national security, and the strengthening of transparency within the justice system and public trust.
