Baltic Supreme Courts meeting in Vilnius
On the 5-6th of September, the annual meeting of the Supreme Courts of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia took place in Vilnius.
A meeting of this format is held every year in a different Baltic State. This year, the event was hosted by the Supreme Court of Lithuania.
Dr. Danguolė Bublienė, the President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, emphasized that it has already become a meaningful tradition that during working sessions of this assembly topics of relevance for the cassation courts of the Baltic States are discussed.
This year's meeting focused on the selection of cassation appeals and the impartiality of the courts. There were wide organizational and practical aspects discussed how to make the selection process more efficient, also possible solutions how to ensure that judges would not be assigned cases in the event of a conflict of interests, or, if assigned, that they could recuse themselves in a timely manner from the examination of the case in question. This meeting undoubtedly has a practical value, as it is not only a great opportunity for a comparison of similarities and differences in certain aspects of the cassation process in all the Baltic States, but also a possibility to refine the best, most proven experiences.
This traditional forum of the Baltic States Supreme Courts is an irreplaceable platform for sharing best practices, challenges and discussing future trends.
Meetings of the Supreme Courts of the Baltic States have been taking place since 1993, when a cooperation agreement was signed between the Supreme Courts of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
