Rimvydas Norkus appointed Chairman of the Judicial Council
The first meeting of the new Judicial Council, held today at the National Courts Administration, resulted in the election of Rimvydas Norkus, the President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, as Chairman of the Judicial Council (hereinafter referred to as the Chairman). Algimantas Valantinas, the Chairman of the Court of Appeal, was appointed Deputy Chairman and Ramūnas Gadliauskas, a judge of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania, was appointed secretary of the Judicial Council.
“The post of the Chairman of the Judicial Council is not a career or an honour, but rather a huge responsibility to continue the work done by the predecessor and the Council during the previous four-year term, look more closely at the needs of the judiciary and envisage long-term needs, as well as manage the activities of the Council which addresses the most important issues,” states the new Chairman.
At its first meeting, the Judicial Council, elected on 11 November at the General Meeting of Judges, not only appointed its top management, but also discussed the directions of activities for the years to come. The meeting highlighted the fact that the Judicial Council would continue the works and initiatives, including the reform of courts and improvement of court administration. Meeting participants also agreed that during their four years’ term the members of the Judicial Council would better listen to the public opinion, represent the interests of the court and solve the problems of judicial practice.
