Visit by the representatives of the Supreme Court of Lithuania at the Court of Justice of the European Union 6
2024-11-25

This year, marking the 20th anniversary of Lithuania's membership in the European Union, at the invitation of Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), on November 11-12, CJEU was visited by the representatives of the Supreme Court of Lithuania – the President of the Supreme Court Danguolė Bublienė, Chairperson of the Criminal Division Gabrielė Juodkaitė-Granskienė, Chairperson of the Civil Division Artūras Driukas, and the judges.

While thanking for the invite, Court President D. Bublienė pointed out that this meeting is a great chance to learn about the latest changes in court practice and share the challenges faced by national courts. Given the constant impact of European Union law on the national court system, dialogue with representatives of the CJEU is particularly valuable and significant.

The visit was started with a working session on “The Activities of the Court of Justice of the European Union and the Role of the Advocate General in the Court,” led by Irmantas Jarukaitis, President of one of the Chambers of the CJEU, and Rimvydas Norkus, Advocate General of the CJEU. This session was followed by a working session on the General Court of the European Union, chaired by Saulius Lukas Kalėda, Judge at the General Court of the EU. Other sessions were held with the Research and Documentation Directorate and the Lithuanian Language Translation Division.

During the meetings, the civil and criminal law practice of the CJEU was discussed. Particular attention was paid to consumer rights and the rights of suspects and defendants. The President of the CJEU, K. Lenaerts, and judges participated in the discussions. Representatives of the Supreme Court of Lithuania observed several CJEU sessions. At the invitation of Laima Andrikienė, a member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA), representatives of the Supreme Court of Lithuania visited the ECA and were introduced to the activities of the Court.
