The President of the Court participated in the forum dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the enlargement of the European Union
On 1-3rd of May, the President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania Danguolė Bublienė participated in the forum “20 years since the accession of 10 States to the European Union: A new constitutional moment for Europe”, which took place in the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The accession of ten new Member States to the European Union (EU) on 1 May 2004, including Lithuania, was the largest enlargement of the Union in terms of population, number of countries and enriched its legal framework.
New EU Member States judges made a valuable contribution to the application and clarification of EU law. Over 20 years (2004-2024), the courts of the 10 new EU countries have referred 1202 preliminary rulings to the Court of Justice of the European Union. Lithuanian courts have submitted a total of 107.
The forum, attended by the Presidents of the EU's Supreme Courts, focused on three main themes: the first theme was devoted to a discussion of 20 years of experience, highlighting the aspects of the 2004 enlargement and the contribution made by the ten new Member States to the development of the EU law; the second theme highlighted how the enlargement has contributed to the development of the Union's values in a legal context; and the last theme was devoted to a discussion of the EU economic regulation.
